Not all influenza vaccines are equivalent, from AstraZeneca’s Flumist® to Sanofi Pasteur’s Fluzone®HD, medical practices can tailor their flu vaccine inventory to fit their patient demographic. Regardless of the patient type there are influenza immunization options i.e. Since Flublok ®isn’t manufactured with eggs, Flublok® may have the added appeal for Allergists needing influenza prevention options for their patients with severe allergy to eggs. Fluzone®HD, along with Flublok® is recommended by the ACIP for patients over 65 due to the enhanced immune response in older patients. Flumist® intranasal delivery is an alternative to the injection for patients preferring this method. There’s the standard influenza vaccine of course as well.
Although the influenza virus has historically been a challenging foe to humanity, the vaccine researchers, developers, and manufacturers are continuing to improve prevention options. Health care providers can make the most of what’s available today and hopefully keep this devious virus at bay.
